Bible study was led by Mary Coates

God is Love    Corinthians 1  13  v1 –    Faith, Hope and Love  the greatest of these is Love.     Love  Protects, perseveres, is patient,  kind and never fails.

There are many different forms of love  :                                                      Man/woman  – caring, sharing, protecting and also the physical side.       Parents/children  –  caring sharing, protecting, teaching.   The caring bond seems to change from one side to the other as the children get older.            Our parents  – do we love one more than the other ?  why?                                But best of all is the Love of God   which covers all these things and more.   In our darkest hours we tend to forget God and try to resolve things on our own –  that is the time we should go to Him   He is there always.

There is Faith and Hope  and Love       but the greatest is Love.

Leader: Darryl Lomas

Psalm 51 v10-13     Whitsuntide/Pentecost,   Following our gathering at Hillsborough Tabernacle last week with other churches and friends Darryl reminded us of past Whitsuntide gatherings when friends from all churches met together to celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit and the hopes that we all have that perhaps in the future these will be revived.

Romans 8    Do you leave your t v switched on standby so it is ready?     In Jerusalem the Disciples were on standby .. are we on standby ?  Do we need to be switched on ready  or are we switched on now ?  Have we received the Holy Spirit or are we still waiting ?  The way to God is through the Holy Spirit

Sunday Worship – 13th May 2018

Sunday, May 13th, 2018

Led by Susannah Youdan from Mayfield Wesleyan Reformed Church

Reading: Luke 24  The risen Christ.

Susannah used candles to illustrate the part light plays in our religious beliefs referring to:

In the beginning God said let there be light and there was light and with light began creation and in the Christian calendar on Christmas morning we sing the light has come into the world. For 33 years whilst Jesus Christ was on earth the light was good.

In Exodus they followed a cloud and then the light from a fire. The Wise Men followed the light of one star amongst millions, whilst ‘Wreckers’ used one candle in a jar to misdirect shipping into thinking they were heading to the safety of a harbour

In the transfiguration Peter saw Jesus in a radiant light but when Jesus was nailed to a tree, the light was snuffed out, the Temple curtain was torn from the top down the middle and there was an eclipse of the sun.

This final darkness led to the disciples being very afraid and hiding in a locked room with the windows closed YET still Jesus appears amongst them and insists the touch and feel his wounds. Jesus is risen on the third day as prophesied proving he has conquered death – God of the living.  Finally Jesus ascends into heaven where he lives forever interceding on our behalf.

Susannah challenges us next week to Stop, Watch and Pray.  Wait as God patiently waits for us. Answer him by saying “God, here am I”.

Christian Aid Walk – 7th May 2018

Tuesday, May 8th, 2018

A number of our congregation joined with approx 100 other walkers on the sponsored 6 mile Christian Aid Walk to the west of Sheffield.

The weather was glorious, the company great and whats more we were raising money for the many good causes supported by Christian Aid and CAFOD.

Many thanks to David Owens and the organising Committee for ensuring at least one walk went ahead despite all the obstacles placed in their way by other Charitable organisations.

Sunday service 6th May 2018

Tuesday, May 8th, 2018

Led By Rev Suzanne Nockels

Reading 2 Corinthians 8: 1-15

Suzanne introduced the theme of her service with a game of pass the parcel, each layer containing a reading or a question.

What have we received from another? – e.g. happiness, mobile phone, watch, wisdom

What have we inherited from past generations at church? – e.g. Family, the building, kindness, trowel (used to lay the foundation stone)

What item at home do you wish to pass on?

What will we pass onto future generations at Tapton?  – e.g. strong church, faith, friendship, improved building

Bible readings:  Luke 12 :13-21    Mark 10:17-22    Matt 5:5    – All include inheritence

Wealth can be a dangerous place – if you are rich  you will be thinking of money, if you are poor you are thinking of money.   To the rich man, Jesus said give away your possessions and he went away grieved.  Suzanne suggested we can grieve over things as well as people.  Scripture tells that the meek will inherit the earth, what do we want to pass on and when?

Do we give it the next generation now when we can see the joy of seeing them with it, will they like what we my consider precious?  Will they like the son in the Prodigal son ‘blow the lot’.

Previously Suzanne spoke on the uprising of discipleship, this time using the example of the first Christians the uprising theme continued on stewardship.

The Roman world was governed by the amount of wealth you had so why would you wish to give it away and lose your position in society? Old prejudices between the Greeks and the Jews led to wealth being hidden.

How do we live?  Do our shopping receipts indicate a Christian life. In world terms we are all rich but in Jesus eyes money takes up too much of our soul space.

Name a generous person – this isn’t what’s in the bank account but may be the time they give, empathy they share, how they listen to others.

Suzanne challenged us to consider:

  • Where is money more precious than God
  • This week give something away
  • Give a non material thing away – something of oneself

The world needs God

Prayer for the week

Tuesday, May 1st, 2018

Dear God, as I stumble through this life, help me to create more laughter than tears,  dispense more cheer than gloom, spread more hope than despair.  Never let me become so indifferent that I will fail to see the wonders in the eyes of a child, or the twinkle in the eyes of the aged.    Never let me forget that my total effort is to cheer people, make them happy, and forget momentarily, all the unpleasantness in their lives.  And in my final moment , may I hear You whisper : “When you made My people smile you made Me smile”   Amen
