Worship/Prayer
We started by discussing the story of Jonah who was called by God to go to Nineveh. But Jonah ran away from the Lord not because he was afraid but because he did not want to do as he was asked and boarded a ship to Tarshish.
The Lord sent a great storm and all the sailors were afraid, they cast lots to see who was responsible and the lot fell on Jonah who told them to throw him into the sea – which they did.
Jonah was swallowed by a great fish and was inside it for 3 days and nights. He prayed to God who listened to his prayer and saved him. This is an interesting story showing that if we disobey God he will punish us BUT if we are truly sorry and ask for forgiveness, no matter what our situation he will rescue us.
The power of prayer is beyond understanding and part of worship that brings us closer to God.
Worship and prayer go hand in hand. We worship the Lord who is our being but we also need to talk with him and to listen to him. John 17 20 tells us that after Jesus had prayed for the disciples he prayed for those who believe in him.
Philippians 4 8 is a wonderful passage, it lists all the things we should strive for and the result is “The God of Peace will be with you”. In Hebrews 12 v 1 we read “throw off everything that hinders ….. fix our eyes on Jesus”
The media bombard us with news etc., but we need to also hear what God has to tell us – we need to hear the needs of others, to share worship together, to devote our wills to the purpose of God to come closer to God and he will be with us to rescue us, to sustain us.
