Worship Sunday 8th July

Lunchtime spent on Lydgate Green in fellowship with members from other Crosspool churches to mark the end of Crosspool Festival week, with the message delivered jointly led by our Minister, Rev Suzanne Nockels and Rev Will Fletcher from Stephen Hill.

We then moved to Tapton for our afternoon service conducted by Suzanne continuing the theme of strong women in the bible.

Strength comes in differing forms be it courage or being different from the norm. Courage to stand up to authority or to take a different course of action.

Jesus brings Mary’s brother Lazarus back to life and Mary during a meal anoints Jesus with expensive perfume bringing complaints from some of the disciples.

Suzanne then referred to Harry Potter and the paintings hanging on the school wall coming to life, leading Suzanne to question what the statues in Parliament Square might be ‘thinking’ when a new statue of  Millicent Fawcett a British intellectual, political leader, activist and writer primarily known for her work as a campaigner for women’s suffrage was situated alongside them.  On the banner she carries is inscribed ‘Courage calls to courage everywhere’.

Courage can be like the fires on the moors, spreading quickly over a wide area. Similarly fear the opposite of courage can spread and be difficult to contain.

Courage to challenge the norm alone can be difficult but if you are doing the right thing then others will join you. We need to put courage on display.

In Acts 4 John and Peter are put in prison for their belief and as a result several thousand men came to believe. When told to stop spreading their message ‘ Peter and John replied, “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges! As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.”

We must look forward and encourage others to be strong in imparting the Good News of Jesus Christ.
