Good Friday service – 30 March

Led by Rev Suzanne Nockels

Readings: Isaiah 53: 3-5  &  Mark 15:16-41

Suzanne reflected on what sacrifices we make but real sacrifice means real suffering and this was illustrated graphically by the extraordinary sacrifice made this week by the French Police Chief Arnaud Beltrame who was murdered after swapping places with a hostage.

Christ sacrificed everything for us, even risking his relationship with his father God crying out “My God, my God why have you forsaken me?”  Taken from Psalm 22 it begins with despair but God listens to his cry for help. His relationship with God becomes stronger than ever. Whatever we lay at the foot of the cross, we can find something deeper and richer in God.

In Luke’s gospel the rebels being crucified with Jesus are given a voice. One rebel defends and acclaims Jesus rather than side with the crowd.  Will we recognise we have a voice?
