Leader : Edwin Ashforth
Reading: Ecclesiastes 5 8 – 17
Edwin will be leading Bible Study this coming Wednesday and three alternate Wednesdays and his talk today was to set the scene :
The Book of Esther : This book begins with the information that King Xerxes who ruled over 127 provinces from India to Cush – the Persian Empire – wanted to show off his wealth so he organised a party for everyone, there is mention of gold and silver, purple, and as much drink as the people wanted – all signs of abundant wealth – BUT was this just generosity on his part or was there an ulterior motive??
Is there a relevance in this story to today?
It should be noted that God is never mentioned in the book of Esther.
The King was in power – it would appear that his aim was to get all the nobles and courtiers etc drunk at the party so they would give him what he wanted. A war council was imminent and he wanted them all on his side.
All these millions of years later there is another war in this area – innocent people are being killed or made homeless and are fleeing risking their lives in small boats to cross the Mediterranean as man fights man. Things have not changed.
Edwin will continue with discussions on the book of Esther ……
