Another discussion re women of the Bible this time Naomi and Ruth.
Ch 1 The scene is set when Elimelek and his wife Naomi and their two sons left Bethlehem because of famine in the land, and traveled to Moab. There the sons married Moab women Ruth and Orpah. Unfortunately ten years later their 3 husbands died. Naomi decided to return to Bethlehem because (Ch.1 v6 The Lord had come to the aid of his people by providing food for them). Naomi told each of her daughter-in-laws to go back to their mothers’ home and to each find another husband. Orpah went back but Ruth stayed with Naomi saying those well known words “don’t urge me to leave you, where you go I will go, where you stay I will stay” a dedication of love still used today by some people.
So after a long and dangerous journey they arrived back in Bethlehem as the barley harvest was beginning.
Ch.2 continues – Ruth went to glean in the fields and it so happened she was in a field belonging to Boaz a relative of Naomi. He protected this vulnerable young woman by telling his workmen not to lay a finger on her and to leave more grain for her and he shared food with her.
Ch.3 Naomi started to plan a future for Ruth so she tells her to bathe and put on perfume and go to Boaz, when he had finished eating and drinking, and lay with him which she did. However Boaz told her there is another more closely related to be her redeemer.
Ch.4 Boaz met 10 elders of the town and the other man …. eventually Boaz took Ruth as his wife, and she bore him a son, called Obed, (he was the father of Jesse, the father of David.)
Thus making Ruth David’s great grandmother.
This is truly a love story
The love of Naomi for Ruth, the love and devotion of Ruth to Naomi and the love felt between Ruth and Boaz.

We look forward to Spring 2015 when Edwin will be with us again to talk about Esther and Vashti.
