BUT – we say this so many times each week – however no one changes because we have said it. BUT God’s but is different – in Acts 2 we read “But God raised Him from the dead.
Continuing Nehemiah.. Ch4 1-13 & 19
The building of the walls of Jerusalem continues but there are critics – criticism in our lives causes fatigue, frustration and fear and this is what these people felt. Opposition to what we are trying to do is hard to cope with – but don’t let it stop you, don’t despair – pray that you get things in proportion again – keep going – finish what you have started. Arm yourself with love and this will give you strength – no-one has to face opposition alone God is there – just ask.

What is Lent all abou8t ?
It is preparation for Easter
Jesus fasted 40 days to pray and talk to His Father in preparation for what was to come.
It is tradition to give something up for Lent but this is not necessary, perhaps you could help someone in need or do something to help someone (out of your comfort zone). Just be positive – prepare yourself for Easter. Jesus died that we may be forgiven and have a second chance, a new way of life – start now in preparation for your second chance, your new life – this is your second chance to be at one with God – put Him first. He gave us freedom and joy – be positive to God and the world. We are citizens of His Kingdom part of His family – be worthy of that honour by your preparation.

We started with reading the story of Jairus’ daughter in Mark 5 v 21 – the synagogue leader came to Jesus and began by saying Please – how often do we start our prayers with “Please”? this man had belief that Jesus could heal his daughter but he still went and pleaded with Jesus face to face – he did not ask anyone else to do this for him. When they were told that the girl had died Jesus still went into the house and because of Jairus’s strong belief the girl was restored. Have we such a strong belief??
Next we read in Matthew 17 v 14 a man asked for Jesus to heal his son of epilepsy – the disciples had not been able to cure him – Jesus healed the boy and when the disciples came and asked him why they had not been able to do that he said “because you have so little faith – if you have faith as small as a mustard seed you can move mountains” (i.e. you can do anything you wish if you have belief that you can)
Finally we read in James 1 v2 trials and temptations – ” the testing of your faith produces perseverance”…. “when you ask you must believe”
How strong is your belief ?? Do you say please when you ask God for anything?
Food for thought for all of us in these readings.

We welcomed Rev. Bill and Mrs Betty Bentham from Scunthorpe as leaders today the first day of Lent.

Have you made a resolution to give something up for Lent?? Have you been tempted today (Valentines Day) to eat those chocolates you were given and “start tomorrow” with giving them up ??
Temptations can often be difficult to resist – we make excuses, we have reasons why …
Matthew 4 1-11 we read how Jesus was tempted by the devil.
He had been in the wilderness for 40 days and nights and must have been hungry – the devil wanted him to turn stones into bread – but he resisted. ” People do not live by bread alone.”
“Do not put the Lord to the test”” The devil offers the world if we worship him – what a temptation – but we must resist – Worship the Lord your God and Him only.
Each and every one of us will be tempted at some time during our lives, maybe more than once, but the love of God is there for all and if we ask He will help us to resist the temptations of the devil. His love is there for us everyday not just Valentines Day just ask and you will receive.

Nehemiah continued …..
When you see a small piece of a picture do you know what the whole is like or do you just think you know??
Or are you really bothered ??
Today is Church Action for Poverty Day
Do you know much about the poverty in Sheffield or the world??
We were given some astonishing figures :
How many are in poverty in the UK? 1 in 5 13.5 million
How much does a family of 2 adults and 2 children need to have a minimum standard of living ? £20,000
How much is the national living wage ? £14,974
Benefit fraud amounted to 1.5 billion but tax fraud by companies and wealthy people amounted to 10 billion.
Did you know the whole picture of this poverty or just a small piece?
Nehemiah went to Jerusalem to see what needed to be done for himself Ch.2
He needed to see the whole picture
Nehemiah 2 17 3 13
He set about, with the help of money from the King, to organise the rebuilding of the walls and this makes very interesting reading ao many different people were offering to build part of the wall – the priests a perfumier a goldsmith etc. etc. built different sections.
But some had doubts – in life there are always people who have doubts about what others are doing. Nehemiah spoke to them about God being a higher power whio was with them and would support what they were doing.
Rebuilding was hard work – for most it was not their everyday work but they wanted to do it – in life we sometimes need to do work that is out of our comfort zone but if it needs to be done with Gods help we can do it.
Nehemiah has been called “the Property Developer of his time” He inspired others to do the work. There are things we want/plan to do and ask for Gods help – we need also to ask ourselves who do we ask to help – who do we include or who do we leave out?? is it up to us to decide ?? We need to see the whole picture not just our little piece of it.
And when the work is finished we MUST give God the glory and not expect it for ourselves.

Bible Study
As we unexpectedly did not have a leader tonight none of us had come prepared so it turned into a D I Y evening which proved to be quite interesting. We read an article in “Christ in all things” briefly about a man who arranged a 39th birthday party for a prostitute who had never had even a cake for her birthday . This led us on to discuss would Christ have done the same in that situation and we all agreed Yes He would then went on to talk about situations we find ourselves in and do we ask “What would Christ do ? This led o further discussions about welcomes or non welcomes received in churches and to ask amongst ourselves Christ welcomed everyone he did not have barriers do we have barriers who we welcome and who not in our lives ? Do you ??? What would Christ do ??
