Leader: Edwin Ashforth
Readings: Acts 28 1-6 Paul in Malta
Eccles:3 1-8 A time for everything
Edwin and Julia have been on holiday to Malta and he told us that he agreed with Paul that the people there show unusual kindness. It is only a small island country and they went through a horrendous time with bombing but are rebuilding and through it all they never faltered in their love of christianity. Their care and love for God is alive.
Ecclesiastes was the third book to be written by Solomon it is a reflection on his life – the reading tells us what God wants us to understand – it reflects who we are.
Men and women argue/compete/fight this is not necessary this is not Christian – be more like the people of Malta love your God and your neighbours and take time. Treat others with love and respect – give time for those in need

The Gap
Between rich and poor
Luke 16 19-31
The parable of the Rich man and Lazarus
We asked questions:
Where did the rich man get his wealth??
Was Lazarus crippled, why did he need to beg?? had he family
We then discussed the rich man’s attitude in Hades, he was wanting Lazarus to bring him water – he was not apologetic for his previous attitude – he wanted Abraham to warn his brothers. Still thinking of himself and his family and not Lazarus.
This story raises many questions
Why did Jesus tell this parable??
Is it relevant to us today??
There is still a gap between poor and rich – is this getting smaller or wider??

Read the parable and see what answers you come up with.

Father’s Day
Leader Suzanne Nockels
Jesus said ” Your Father knows what you need before you ask him”
We were shown pictures of various fathers in various moods and asked “How do you see your Father God?? Some people have good memories of their father others not so good – does Jesus show us The Father – is it “like father like son”
The Sabbath -
readings Exodus 23 10-13
Mark 2 13-22 and Mark 3 1 – 6
What is time?? God gave us time – He formed the day and the night – do we thank God for time? Do we waste time – what is gone can never be re-claimed.
What is your Sabbath?? A day of rest?? How should Christians keep the Sabbath?? – Jesus did not keep strict rules about the Sabbath as did those around him – he healed the man with the withered hand who reached out to him – do we reach out to him?
Set time to build or rebuild relationships.
Take time to rest and recover.
Love takes time
Grief takes time
Forgiveness takes time
God gave us time – think carefully how you use it.

Leaders : Rev .Bill and Mrs Betty Bentham (Scunthorpe)
Psalm 136 Thanksgiving “His love is eternal.
Betty talked about “Forward Together” the theme for this year for the Congregational Federation – we must all go forward together – no competition.
Corinthians 12 Share We need each other.
Deuteronomy 8 11 Do not forget the Lord your God.
Luke 8 40-56 Jairus’s daughter the woman with the haemorrhage.
Imagine we are a study group – miracles by faith” Put yourself in Jesus’s shoes …how was he feeling at this time?? He had healed a man of demons and had been rejected – he had been rejected by his own in Nazareth and here he was – surrounded by crowds who had come to be entertained. Then Jairus – a high official – came on the scene – was this to be more hostility? – How do we deal with rejection – how did Jesus deal with it ?? With compassion. Jesus saw this man a father in distress and was on his way to help when the woman touched his cloak – her faith made her whole. Meanwhile the little girl died – Jesus told them to believe. In times of torment and trouble do we believe ??
Jesus went on to the home where the professional mourners laughed at him and once again he was rejected – but he wanted them to see beyond that moment – to see God’s activity in the world – shed light among your fellows – try to do the impossible – show the world there IS A GOD.
he will help to overcome rejection and lead the way forward.

Genesis 19 Sodom and Gomorrah
Further to a TV programme on the subject, we discussed the events leading up to the destruction of Sodom and Lot’s escape with his daughters, but his wife looked back and was turned to a pillar of salt.
We then went on to talk about Psalm 23 – nothing is a coincidence – our lives are mapped out for us – even when we think we are in control it is not so – God is our guide, he leads us by still waters, he is by our side in dark places and he refreshes our minds and souls he will not leave us if we love him, but if we try to go our own way, as did the people of Sodom, then his patience will not last forever.

Who would you invite to join you for a meal???
Jesus and his disciples ate with Levi and other tax collectors. Mark 2 13
Psalm 36 5-9 What is God like??? He is compassionate, always available, the host at the feast. We may all come – its up to you.
Jesus said – “those who are well have no need of a doctor”. Jesus sometimes used puzzling words to get his message across. Old maps are interesting to look at but not much use when you need to get to somewhere now we need new ones to show us landmarks and new roads. We need to think in the here and now not be in the past. Are we behind the times??
Patches – if something has a small hole then its alright to mend this with a patch, but if it is very worn then a patch will make it worse – Get a new garment – are we trying to patch something that is too worn???
Wine – new wine is gassy – it expands and sometimes explodes, an exploding bottle can set off a reaction – be flexible about your view of yourself and God if you are too fixed you could explode – you would waste wine and a wineskin – how adaptable are we in our prayer life, church life and home life???
We must not be afraid
